The Five People You Meet in Heaven, author Mitch Albom

This is a short, fiction story, one of several books that Albom has written. I believe you pick a book because often you are meant to read and experience its content, which is why I share with you about the mix of books I have experienced. You may however not be in need of it or think you don’t read this type of genre – I’ll leave it to you to decide! The stories main character is Eddie, a lonely war veteran who dies at the age of 83. His death is a result of an accident at the fair ground where he worked. This is where the story begins, a count-down to Eddie’s death, a dramatic opening chapter.  Then we are back to the beginning of Eddie’s life, his birth. Eddie also awakes in the afterlife asking himself ‘where are my worries?’ where are my pains?’ here his purpose in life and ‘the five people’ he met who impacted on in his life are explained to him.

The New York Times quotes ‘a book with a genuine power to stir and comfort its readers.’ I have to agree with this quote. The power of a word or a collective of words can be with you for a long time.
